August Birthstone Jewelry: What is a Peridot?
A gemstone that has been revered throughout history, dating all the way back to biblical times, the peridot is an exclusively green stone that has been recognized as the birthstone for people born in August. Known as the “evening emerald” because it shines under starlight, it’s believed to ward off nightmares and provide protection and healing.
What is a Peridot and Why is it Green?
Peridot is a form of Olivine, a mineral composed of magnesium and iron found in volcanic rock and lava deep within the Earth that surfaces from volcanic eruption or earthquakes. The reason why peridot is green is due to the amount of iron in the stone: the more iron, the deeper the shade of green. Unlike other gemstones, you can only find peridots in shades of green ranging from light yellow-green to dark green with just a hint of yellow or brown.
How to Pronounce “Peridot”
There is some debate over the pronunciation, but the more accurate and common way to say peridot is “pear-uh-dot” – even though others might say “pear-uh-doe.” The name is believed to come from the Arabic word “faridat” which means “gem.” It is also referenced in the bible as “pitdah” which is the Hebrew name for peridot.
How to Care for August Birthstones
Peridot gemstones are durable enough to wear daily – rated 6.5 to 7 on the Mohs scale of hardness – but it can still be damaged from sudden temperature drops, so it’s best to not wear peridot jewelry while taking a shower or going for a swim. Additionally, you should store peridot jewelry away from other gemstone jewelry to prevent unwanted scratching. And for cleaning peridot stones, just use mild soap and warm water. Anything more extreme could damage your birthstone.
